Pittenger on failure of Balanced Budget Amendment

Statement

Date: April 12, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

This afternoon, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) voted to pass H.J. Res. 2, Proposing a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

The resolution failed to gain enough Democrat support to reach the necessary two-thirds majority required for passage.

"Hardworking North Carolina families regularly make tough decisions to live within their means. Budgeting is a fundamental life skill. Yet Democrats continue to believe that Washington should live by a different set of rules," said Congressman Pittenger. "A balanced budget has long been a priority of mine, going back to my days in the North Carolina Senate when I identified over $1.5 billion in spending cuts. In Congress, I have supported and helped write several balanced budget proposals. This amendment would have been a major step in our critical fight to curb wasteful spending. This was a disappointing day."
